This is not a bear you want to rub against your nose to help you sleep. Erika and I were in Yellowstone hiking on this path a few years ago. We had seen a few bears during the day – from a distance. As we walked this trail we found ourselves alone. I wasn’t very comfortable without a larger group to give any bears a wider selection of victims. As we rounded a corner near a clump of trees I hear a loud deep guttural sound; so close I knew it was all over. A very near heart attack! An almost load in my pants! The sound was a small “old faithful” type gas pocket venting. Why does nature make those things sound just like my imagination of angry bear noises?
